FaceBook and VTech; New IOP Study; Students in Action

Update: Kristina Rizga of WireTap takes down that New York Times poll Josh mentions in the comments.

A few articles worth checking out today:

  • Adam Conner discusses the role of FaceBook in dealing with yesterday's tragedy in Virginia.
  • Harvard's Institute of Politics has released some new youth polling. Check back later for more in depth-analysis of the results.
  • Finally, I don't usually read Mother Jones, but ended up with a copy this week and was surprised by this article about Ava Lowery, a 15 year old girl who is apparently internet-famous for making her own viral videos protesting the war in Iraq. Last week were were talking about making Internet TV; Ava has been doing it for over a year now.

polling

A lot of the questions were pretty poorly-worded to my mind. Still, there are some really interesting tidbits in there. For instance, only about 1/3 of those surveyed self-identified as “politically aware,” but for the questions that went “did you discuss this in the past week,” US politics, the 2008 election, and iraq all beat out celebrity gossip and sports news. That’s interesting.

Other Polling

Other polling presents a somewhat different picture, although this is an overall poll with a 18 - 29 sub-sample, so there’s a high margin of error.

Questions

The questions here aren’t great either:

“[did] the United States did the right thing in taking military action against Iraq?”

c’mon …

VT

another thing I noticed was how fast students organized spontaneous vigils, also via facebook (and text messages). they’re all over the place. link: http://ucsb.facebook.com/s.php?q=vir…
