Why I'm Running for Congress

Looks like Emanuel showed up early so we are live now!

Emanuel will be here at Future Majority beginning at 7pm PACIFIC (10pm eastern). If you'd like to ask him questions about his campaign, the issues he supports, running as a young candidate, or anything else, leave a question in the comments now or stop back at 7. --Mike

My name is Emanuel Pleitez and I am running for Congress in California's 32nd Congressional District, which is being vacated by Labor Secretary nominee Hilda Solis.

This district is my home. I was born and raised on the Eastside of Los Angeles and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in El Sereno. Growing up in a below poverty-level, single-parent, immigrant household, and being the first in my family to graduate from college, I understand first-hand the issues facing my community and the steps we must take to move forward.

Before I was ten years old, I lived in ten different places throughout South and East L.A. I remember my mother, Isabel, a cafeteria worker, explaining to my sister and I when it was time to go live with a different family. Often times we would end up taking a back room or garage. My mother always explained these moves with enthusiasm, like they were new adventures. Obstacles were challenges to overcome and setbacks became tests of character. More importantly, mother taught me that education is the gateway to opportunity and despite our economic hardships, I was able to gain admittance, attend and graduate from Stanford University. I want to bring that optimistic attitude and resiliency to our district, especially during this economic crisis.

I have used my education to rise out of poverty and enter public service--giving back to the community that afforded me such opportunity. Most recently, I served on the Obama-Biden Transition Team for the Treasury Department. I previously worked for Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa during his tenure on the Los Angeles City Council and had a short stint in the offices of U.S. Senators Tom Daschle and Hillary Clinton on the Senate Democratic Steering and Coordination Committee.

I am running for Congress to be a true representative for my community, a fighter for the working-class, and to pursue progressive ideals that ensures economic justice, civil rights, and affordable healthcare for everyone. These are the issues that I value.

I am the son of a union member who will make workers and labor issues a priority. Every day more and more people are losing their homes and jobs. I have not forgotten what it's like to worry about having a roof over your head or whether or not you can afford to visit the doctor. Having served President Obama on the Transition Team for the Treasury Department, I believe I am the best prepared to offer new ideas and innovative solutions in dealing with our current economic crisis.

This is a new era in American politics, a time where progressive ideas and a commitment to public service is encouraged and supported.

If elected, at 26 years old, I would be the youngest serving Latino member of Congress. But I cannot do this without your support. Please join me in my campaign for new leadership and a new direction.

Together, we can make history.

Thank you so much for being

Thank you so much for being on FM, its great to meet you!

I wanted to ask you how being younger than most of the (much) older representatives helps you view issues in a unique way

The average age of the current U.S. House of Representatives is 57 years old. I believe my age sets me apart from the other candidates because it gives me a unique perspective and voice we need in Congress. Growing up in the District that I am running to represent, I also hope to reflect the community's interests and how we can move forward with new ideas and innovative solutions to the problems we face, especially pertaining to the economy.

being a young candidate

Emanuel-

Your campaign sounds really exciting. I wish you the best.

My question is- what advice would you give younger potential candidates who are considering jumping into electoral politics? Do you feel you've framed your relative youth into an asset on the campaign trail? Do you think you've made it irrelevant? How would you suggest younger candidates frame the issue?

Thanks,
James

I hope that my candidacy for Congress encourages more youth to participate in politics. The more young people involved, the more voices, the more ideas, and the closer we get to solving the problems that we face.

Young People on the Campaign Trail

Emanuel,

Thanks so much for taking time to answer our questions. I'm wondering a couple things about your campaign. As someone who worked for the Obama campaign, what lessons do you take about engaging young voters and how is that going to shape your campaign?

Your District

I'm not in your district, but I'd love to hear from you what the issues are that most concern young people, and all people, in your district?

If you are elected, what legislation would you pursue to help alleviate those concerns and help your district?

Using the Young supporters!

I, too, am not in your district. I would bet that young people around the country would be willing to make calls to other young voters in your district. I know I would be willing!!!

Often times, young candidates are attacked for lack of experience. What experiences have you had that have properly prepared you for Congress? I personally feel that being an every day citizen SHOULD qualify one for congress, but hey, that is just me! :)

Thanks for being available through FM!

Most recently, I served on the Treasury Transition Team for President Barack Obama. I believe I am the most prepared candidate to deal with the current economic crisis and offer the innovative solutions we need. We also need Representatives who understand the banking system so that we can effectively regulate them. If elected, I plan to seek a seat on the House Financial Services Committee.

I think you are more than

I think you are more than qualified and I am impressed by your drive and your time on the Treasury Transition team!

I look forward to helping anyway i can!

We are in the process of launching our virtual campaign headquarters, which will give supporters the opportunity to log-in and make phone calls to voters from their home. We are coordinating an effort with community colleges and universities for a national phone-bank in an effort to raise awareness about the campaign. Our Field Team is leading this effort and we should have the details soon!

Welcome and Thanks!

Thanks for joining us on FM!

Unemployment and debt is making it difficult for young people to get ahead, especially those without any college education. What policies do you think will best help a generation that is more progressive, tolerant, and diverse than any that has come before it?

We need to invest in students early, K-12 and make it easier and more affordable for students to attend college. Raising tuition each year to balance state budgets is unacceptable. I support programs like AmeriCorps which encourage Public Service in exchange for educational awards to pay for tuition or college loans.

Power Shift

In two weeks, 10,000 young climate and energy activists are going to descend on Washington for Power Shift, a conference on climate change and green issues, and a national day of lobbying.

What would you say to those students and young activists? What are your thoughts on the best way to produce green jobs and shift to a green energy economy?

Emanuel Pleitez, Candidate

Emanuel Pleitez, Candidate for CA-32

This event sounds great. I wish I could be there! To those students and young activists, I would say: KEEP THE DIALOGUE GOING. The only way we can shift to a green economy and start to produce green jobs is if we keep talking about why this is important to our future. I hope to address this issue in my campaign. The United States should be a leader in developing green technology and green jobs for the future.

I just want to commend you

I just want to commend you on your drive to stand up and take responsibility for your community. People are going to say things about your age, but the bottom line is that a large percentage of Americans are under the age of 50 (including our new President and First Lady), a large number still are under 45, and so too are those if us under 35. It is time that our governing bodies reflect the shift in the American demographic on every level. That is the true meaning of progress. How will your platform speak to that demographic? I am a young, professional, I work in public policy, but I know that some of what I hear from policymakers and others who have been in leadership positions is not reaching me, a well-qualified, and well-educated individual so I KNOW they aren't reaching the masses my age and younger. How will you encourage others in Washington, D.C. to really speak to this demographic?

Emanuel Pleitez, Candidate

Emanuel Pleitez, Candidate for CA-32

Right now, I have 18 full-time staff volunteers ranging in age from 18-30 working on my campaign team. Some have even quit their jobs to work on this campaign! My campaign will speak to this important demographic because they are helping me to shape my campaign from the ground up. I am honored to have them on my team. I could not run for Congress without the support I've received from the community, friends, colleagues, family, and new supporters who have joined my campaign.

Prop 8

Emanuel,

I was in your district just before Election Day and ate at a Chinese restaurant called ABC. This restaurant had place-mats that pushed for 'Yes on 8'. Older immigrant communities seem to be less tolerant about civil rights. How do you propose to persuade these communities that they should be more tolerant?

Education.

Your business background

Emanuel, I understand you worked for a while in the financial services industry. What exactly did you do there, and what did you learn? Are there lessons you hope to apply to your work in Congress?

Emanuel Pleitez, Candidate

I worked as Financial Analyst in the equities division. I also worked in the public sector infrastructure group and private banking. In order to regulate the banking industry, we need Representatives who better understand the system. If elected, I plan to seek a seat on the House Financial Services Committee.

Are you a vegetarian? If

Are you a vegetarian? If not, why? As a 26 year old running for a seat, you must be aware of the cruelty that takes place in slaughter houses. Chickens, cows, and pigs are torture for meat. The Latino population is one of the biggest meat eating groups. But forgetting about the rights of animals, let’s talk about health. In your campign you mention health issues. Eating meat is one of the major causes of heart problems and obesity. What do you plan on doing being that you are young and you are aware of the problem? Latinos are the highest population being obese. What do you propose to do about this?

Emanuel Pleitez, Candidate

Another issue affecting the Latino community disproportionately is diabetes. I support increasing comprehensive prevention and education program about nutrition and food choice.

Prop 8

A big issue in California in the past few months is Prop 8, the measure banning gay marriage. Young voters were the only age demographic to vote against the measure.

What's your position on this issue and what, as a member of congress, will you do for the LGBT community?

Emanuel Pleitez, Candidate

Emanuel Pleitez, Candidate for CA-32

I voted no on prop 8. we should not be voting on anyone's civil rights.

Immigration

Immigration has fallen off as a major issue of late, but it affects people everyday...getting a job, driving a car, applying for student loans, etc. On your website, immigration is not listed as a top issue. Will you try to resurface this issue or do you think the economy and health care are bigger priorities?

I am the son of immigrant parents from Mexico and El Salvador. If elected to represent East Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley, I plan to be part of the movement that calls for comprehensive immigration reform that respects worker's rights and protects our national security.

Education and Affordable Housing

First, I would like to commend all of your hard work, dedication, and all that you have accomplished thus far; you are a true inspiration to our Latino youth. I wish you and your team the best of luck during the campaign.

Here are a couple of issues that I hope you can address:

1. Education. How do you propose to decrease high school drop-out rates in your district? How could you ensure that the students in your district have greater access to resources that will prepare them for college? In terms of the No Child Left Behind Act, what should be the federal government’s role in funding its mandates?

2. Housing. Due to rising costs and reduced government subsidies and incentives there is a dire shortage of decent affordable housing for low-income people. How do you plan to deal with this issue in your district? What would you do to assist the development of affordable housing for low-income households?

Again, I wish you best and I thank you for taking the time to address some of these issues.

Thanks to Emanuel

We're getting to the end of our hour. I hope Emanuel will stick around to answer any remaining questions, but before he does I just wanted to say thanks to him for stopping by to talk with us.

Best of luck in your campaign.

Youth Vote

2008 has been coined " the year of the youth vote". What is your plan to bring new voices to the table?

Thank you for your leadership.
