Let's Get Calling -- Getting Young Voters to the Polls in Georgia

Sarah wrote about efforts to mobilize young voters in the Georgia runoff yesterday, passing on a few tips from the Young Democrats of Georgia on how to get involved. One of these was phone banking with friends.

Fortunately, YDG has set up "Let's Get Calling," an opportunity for Young Democrats from all over the country to contact young Georgia voters about the election. Details below:

YDG has made it easy. You can access our phone bank online, from the comfort of your own home, or coffee shop, or dorm room...you get the idea. All you need is
1. Access to the Internet
2. A phone
3. An RSVP for one of the phone banks below

That's it, we'll take care of the rest. No long hours of dialing and
leaving messages, our system will let you spend your time actually
talking to voters. SO LET'S GET MOVING PEOPLE!

Here's our call-times coming up. Sign-up for one of the times below by RSVPing, click on the link, and let's get the Youth Vote out for
Democrats on December 2nd.

  1. Sunday November 23rd, 1-3PM - RSVP by clicking Here

GA Young Voters for the Runoff

The Senate runoff in Georgia will be working hard to keep the enthusiasm going from the November election and get the same excited democratic Obama supporters to come back a month later and vote again.

This, understandably, includes young voters. The Georgia Young Dems are one of the groups rewarded with a GoGrant a few years ago and have since bulked up in time for the 2008 election. Little did everyone know that the job wouldn't be over on November 4th.

The GA-YD's are looking for vote pledges, and they are working to empower the state's young voters to come out once more on December 2nd.

According to the blog

"Once again, it is going to be the Youth Vote that makes the difference in which candidate will win. Natiowide, on November 4th, Young Voters came out in record numbers to support Democrats, we need to do it one more time. YOU have the power to change this election for Democrats. Here's what we, as Young Democrats, can do over the next 2 weeks.

  1. Pledge to Vote
  2. Hold a phone bank party!
  3. Volunteer for a campaign

Find details to do all of these great things on the GA YD blog. Further the Georgia Democratic Party sent a call out for operatives who are in post election mode to come to Georgia and work for a few weeks to help get out the vote for Martin's race.

Much luck to our friends in Georgia - get our fellow young voters to the polls!

370 Students at a Georgia College Disenfranchised

Via the Election Protection Coalition Blog:

Election Protection is working in Bleckley County, Georgia to ensure that students at Middle Georgia College are able to vote today after voting officials apparently extended, then suddenly withdrew, a deadline that would have ensured students were registered in time to use a regular ballot.

Federal observers have been sent to monitor the situation.

The controversy stems from a registration drive by the Obama campaign at the college, where 90% of the students are African-American. About 500 students were registered prior to the deadline, but the registrar then sent a letter to 370 of the students asking for proof of residence within three days. Most of these students did not even receive the letter until after that deadline had passed.

Upcoming DNC Youth Council Delegate Trainings: Georgia, Utah, Wisconsin

The DNC Youth Council is getting ready to hold three more trainings on how to become delegates to the Democratic National Convention in August:

Last week, we held our first conference call training on the process to be a delegate from New Mexico. The training was extremely successful and we are eager to get underway with our next round of calls.

Below one will find a listing of some of our upcoming calls. Please spread the word to as many people as possible about these. On each call we will be joined by a member of that respective state's party to go over the process to be a Congressional District, PLEO, or At-Large delegate to the Democratic National Convention. In addition to the specific training, we will be sure to provide information on how to get more involved with the State Party and other youth organizations.

The upcoming calls are:
